St Andrew's Healthcare - Fitz Roy House
Challenge
St Andrews Healthcare were challenged to design & build a new ‘Home-from-home’ for up to 110 adolescent patients, with a budget of £45 million as part of Europe’s largest mental health care facility yet for young people. Firstly, the new building had to fit within the heritage of the existing Northampton site. Secondly, it must deliver the safety and security needed: the patients and staff need to be kept safe at all times, and individual wards will require differing levels of security, and thirdly it all has to create an environment that is warm and welcoming, helping patients recovery.

Enterprise Audit Report - EAR©
To develop a strategy for this project, St Andrew’s Health care appointed Check Your Security to evaluate the current physical security system in place, to analyse and determine which products and solutions will be optimal for the creation of a secure & safe building for adolescents with mental health issues.
This process was undertaken by utilising the Enterprise Audit Report (EAR©) to first establish a facility characterisation with the key stakeholders. Part of this was to take into consideration how the latest technology could be implemented, offering enhancements to the security teams monitoring and further protection of staff, patient and public safety in trend with the security industry culture changes.
"We have complete confidence in Check Your Security as we have worked with them for many years now, they have created a safe and reliable solution throughout the whole hospital, it is paramount for our rehabilitative work with vulnerable young people that we ensure the safety of patients and staff 24/7."

With its curved walls and calming colours and open environment, cameras are deployed not to disrupt the relaxing visual equilibrium, placed above the eye line or forming a pattern in larger areas. Curved walls allow patients to see further in the hospital and reduce anxiety, as a result smaller cameras are used due to the nature of the area covered.
Something that is central to how we support every patient is that we work with them as an individual, and design a package of care that suits them and only them. We don’t just look at their condition - we take into account their personality, preferences, hobbies, beliefs and physical capabilities. We find that physical activity, occupational therapy, and spiritual well being, can be influential over recovery as traditional therapeutic approaches.
