Challenge
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) was faced with a life cycle change to their CCTV system, which was scheduled for updating. This included a migration from an analogue to a digital platform, a control room refit and a new design layout. The project delivery needed to be seamless due to the control room being the main hub for all communications and the control centre for 24/7 emergency responses for the Hospitals security team.

Solution
NNUH installed Flir analogue video encoders to integrate its existing 76 external PTZ, internal static cameras, intercom help points and barriers. A new hybrid analogue/digital system was installed, which is managed using the Flir Control Centre software, creating complete interoperability for the end-user. They also installed a state of the art control-room workspace for an effective incident planning area.

Benefits
The Flir high-definition surveillance system easily and cost effectively integrates into the NNUH's existing infrastructure, consuming less space and power. The Flir technology and the new control room resulted in the creation of an extremely friendly ergonomic, shared workspace, it lowered operational costs, enabled better patient control and higher quality service. Internal investigation time was reduced by 25%.

Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is a National Health Service academic teaching hospital located on the southern outskirts of Norwich and was the first new NHS teaching hospital built in England for more than 30 years. The university hospital replaced the former Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, which was founded in 1771, and the West Norwich Hospital.

The NNUH was built under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI), and opened in late 2001: it has 1200 acute beds and offers a wide range of NHS acute health services. It is one of the largest hospitals in the United Kingdom in terms of in-patient capacity and is a teaching centre for nurses (adult and children), midwives, doctors, therapists and operating department practitioners, whilst hosting the Norwich GP speciality training scheme.

Enterprise Audit Report - EAR©
To develop a strategy for this project, Serco Group PLC Site Facilities Management company appointed Check Your Security to evaluate the current physical security system in place, to analyse and determine which products and solutions will be optimal for future proofing towards a fully digital NHS.

This process included completing the Enterprise Audit Report (EAR©) to first establish a facility characterisation with the key stakeholders. Part of this was to consider how the latest technology could be implemented and how it would enhance the security teams' protection staff, patient and public.

The Enterprise Audit Report provided us with an in-depth, evidence-based foundation, enabling us to analyse and allow our security strategy to plan improvement and continually evolve. Attaining this necessary information has given the trust the ability to expand and meet the ever-growing security threats and patient care requirements within the NHS.

Future Proofing a Digital NHS...
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is now equipped with the intelligence and solution led design, electing to create a new control room with the latest fully integrated and ergonomic command centre furniture. This shared working environment was tailored to NNUH and, with careful arrangement, incorporated an effective incident planning area by utilising a newly released version 7.0 Flir CCTV video management solution for real-time situational awareness. With a video wall of key critical cameras integrated with the barriers, access control and emergency intercoms, as part of the transition to a digital platform, the analog recording equipment was decommissioned, and the existing cameras migrated onto the Flir 216 Encoders and 76 channels, including two new recording servers.

We knew that our environment would be tough to deliver. We had a range of environments, including an out of date control room, legacy hardware deployed across the hospital.

From our opening interactions through to the final conclusion of the final project, Check Your Security exceeded our expectations in every way. The initial task was to review our current CCTV solution and develop a strategy that allowed us to migrate from analogue to digital under a challenging environment.

It was a logical extension of our relationship with Check Your Security to ask them to undertake the upgrade project, and once again, they certainly rose to the challenge. There were many technical and logistical difficulties to overcome, but we found the CYS team to be proactive and professional.
