CAT 5 Cable

Category 5 cable, commonly known as Cat 5, is an unshielded twisted pair type cable designed for high signal integrity. The actual standard defines specific electrical properties of the wire, but it is most commonly known as being rated for its Ethernet capability of 100 Mbit/s.
Check Your Security Limited often installs cat5 cable for hybrid (analogue camera / digital recorder) CCTV systems thereby giving the customer a direct upgrade path to a fully digital system in the future.
Its specific standard designation is EIA/TIA-568. Cat 5 cable typically has three twists per inch of each twisted pair of 24 gauge copper wires within the cable. The twisting of the cable reduces electrical interference and crosstalk. Another important characteristic is that the wires are insulated with a plastic that has low dispersion, that is, the dielectric constant of the plastic does not depend greatly on frequency. Special attention also has to be paid to minimizing impedance mismatches at connection points otherwise the data rate carried by the cable is reduced.
It is often used in structured cabling for computer networks such as Fast Ethernet, although it is often used to carry many other signals such as basic voice services and in the case of Check Your Security Limited CCTV signals. In the case of analogue CCTV signals a balun is used at each end of the cable to change from the balanced condition of the cat 5 cable to the unbalance coaxial termination.

Cat5e is a higher specification cat5 cable recommended for carrying higher speed data traffic.

Cat5 cable comes in two variants UTP & STP. UTP is unshielded twisted pair cair wheras STP is shielded Twisted pair cable comprising a thin aluminium foil screen surrounding the twisted pairs beneath the outer cable sheath. STP may be used where greater immunity to noise or signal emmination is a requirement. STP will be thicker and less flexible.
