Balun
What is a Balun?A balun is a device designed to convert between balanced and unbalanced electrical signals, such as between coaxial cable and twin-lead.
This is almost always done through the use of a small isolation transformer, with the earth ground or chassis ground left floating or unconnected on the balanced side. This transformer can then also perform impedance matching at the same time. A balun generally has no other functional purpose except for compatibility between systems.
At Check Your Security Limited we appreciate the convergence of CCTV and fully digital signals. Many systems we fit are hybrid analogue systems with digital recorders in line with many other companies. We understand that cabling a customers premises for CCTV can be costly and as such we try to where possible install cat5e cable instead of coax to all cameras where conditions allow. We install cat5e cable to future proof the customers installation giving them an easy upgrade path to fully digital systems without the need to re-cable.
Because we use cat5e cable a balun is required to connect the unbalance termination on the camera to the balanced cat5e twisted pair cable.
With certain types of balun it is also possible to feed DC power to the camera down the same cat5 cable removing the need for a separate power supply.
